According to the story, the holy man granted permission for the fort's construction on the condition that no building within the complex should be taller than his own abode. If any structure violated this condition, the entire fort would be doomed. However, one of the rulers' successors constructed a palace that exceeded the height of the saint's residence, leading to the fort's downfall.
Another popular legend associated with Bhangarh Fort is the story of Princess Ratnavati. It is said that she was exceptionally beautiful, and a sorcerer named Singhia fell in love with her. He tried to use dark magic to seduce her, but the princess discovered his plan and foiled his spell. In a fit of rage, Singhia cursed the fort, predicting its destruction and the death of all who lived within its walls.
Despite the legends, the actual decline of Bhangarh Fort is believed to have occurred due to various historical factors. The fort was abandoned in the late 18th century after facing repeated attacks from the Marathas. It is believed that an earthquake further damaged the structures, leading to its eventual abandonment.
Today, Bhangarh Fort remains in ruins, but it continues to attract visitors from around the world due to its intriguing history and alleged supernatural experiences. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has declared the fort a protected monument to preserve its architectural and historical significance.
